The Daniel Defense RIS III 9.5" handguard assembly brings special operations-grade rail performance to your AR build in a lighter, more versatile package. Built on the proven two-piece design trusted by U.S. Special Operations Command since 2006, the RIS III strips unnecessary weight while keeping the rock-solid construction and uninterrupted upper rail platform that professionals rely on. This black anodized handguard blends Mil-Spec 1913 rails with M-LOK attachment versatility, giving you genuine flexibility to configure your rifle exactly how you need it.
The 9.5" length strikes a practical balance for shooters who want a compact handguard without sacrificing rail real estate. Its two-piece design uses the same proven 6-bolt bolt-up system and barrel nut compatibility as the earlier RIS II, so if you're familiar with that platform, installation and setup are straightforward. Aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum keeps weight down while mil-spec fasteners and hard coat anodizing ensure durability through hard use and harsh conditions.
Accessory mounting is where the RIS III shines: seven M-LOK attachment points distributed along the handguard give you modern, tool-less mounting options, while integral QD swivel attachment points on both sides support sling systems. The uninterrupted upper Picatinny rail provides rock-solid mounting for optics, lights, and other rail-mounted gear. If you upgrade or swap components, the RIS III upper rail is fully compatible with RIS II lower rails, letting you mix configurations without buying new hardware.
| Handguard Length | 9.5 inches |
| Material | Aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum |
| Finish | Mil-Spec Type III hard coat anodized (black) |
| Upper Rail | Uninterrupted Mil-Spec 1913 Picatinny rail |
| Attachment System | M-LOK on 7 surfaces; integral QD swivel points both sides |
| Mounting | 6-bolt bolt-up system; backward compatible with RIS II barrel nut and bolt-up plate |
| Fasteners | Grade 8 military specification |
| Design | Two-piece free-floating |
Yes. The RIS III upper rail is fully compatible with RIS II lower rails, and it uses the same barrel nut and bolt-up plate as the RIS II, so existing hardware is compatible. This also means you can mix RIS II lower rails (with Picatinny) and RIS III upper rails (with M-LOK) if you want to combine both attachment systems.
The 9.5" is a mid-length handguard offering a balance of accessory rail space and compact profile. Longer RIS III versions (12.5" and 13.0" FSP) provide additional real estate for mounting and support the ability to attach M203 and M320 grenade launchers when the lower rail section is removed—a feature limited to those longer models.
The seven M-LOK attachment points accept any standard M-LOK-compatible accessories, such as lights, grips, and other modular gear. The uninterrupted upper Mil-Spec 1913 rail accommodates traditional Picatinny-mounted optics, lights, and accessories as well.
Installation uses the same proven 6-bolt bolt-up system as the RIS II. If you've installed a mil-spec handguard before, the RIS III will be familiar. The use of the existing barrel nut and bolt-up plate means you're not introducing new hardware to learn.
